Dr. James Bond

Dr. James Bond is a bariatric and general surgeon at False Creek Healthcare Centre. He is also a Thoracic Surgeon (Chief of Division), Director of Adult Chest Wall Deformity Program, and Director of Lung Nodule Rapid Autopilot Program at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

He received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and completed his
general surgery residency from the University of Calgary. He completed his Thoracic Surgery Fellowship from the University of British Columbia. He went on to pursue his masters in Adult Education from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Bond has 6 published works, and 3 ongoing research papers related to the field of general surgery and thoracic surgery. On an ongoing basis, he serves as a lecturer on Thoracic Surgery Updates, Medical Professionalism and Thoracic Surgery Clinical Clerkship in the Vancouver area. His most recent award includes Teacher of the Year Award from the University of BC. He is registered and licensed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Dr. Chris Cobourn

A fellowship-trained General Surgeon, Dr. Chris Cobourn has extensive training and experience in the use and placement of the LAP-BAND™ as well as performance of Gastric Sleeve, Mini Gastric Bypass and Revision surgeries.

In 1991, he introduced laparoscopic surgery to the Mississauga area, and since then has been focusing his time and practice on advanced laparoscopic surgery. Currently, he is a General Surgeon at Trillium Health Center and the CEO of SmartShape Weight Loss Centre in Mississauga.

His expertise in advanced laparoscopic procedures include LAP-BAND™, Gastric Sleeve and Revision surgery, gall bladder removal, hernia repair, advanced bowel surgery and spleen removal. In addition to his active practice in advanced laparoscopic surgery, he also specializes in Surgical Oncology, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery and has full hospital privileges at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga.

As an internationally respected and sought after speaker, Dr. Cobourn is honored to receive the opportunity to speak to the medical community on various topics regarding obesity and weight loss programs offered at Smartshape. In 2011, he was invited to speak at the two most prestigious international obesity conferences, the 2nd Annual Obesity Summit and the XVI World Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders in Hamburg, Germany and continues to speak at National and International meetings.

Currently, he is serving on expert committees and panels to establish worldwide standards and practices for bariatric surgery.

Dr. Katherine Hsu

Dr. Katherine Hsu is a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon at our False Creek Lap-Band Clinic. She has extensive training and a proven track record in advanced laparoscopic techniques. She is also on staff at the Burnaby Hospital and an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor. Previously, she has held locum positions at Lions Gate Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Royal Jubilee Hospital/Victoria General Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, and the Pembroke General Hospital.

She received her Medical Doctorate (MD) in 2000 from the University of Western Ontario, followed by the completion of her Residency in General Surgery from the University of British Columbia. In 2004, she obtained her Masters in Surgery from the University of British Columbia and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship from McGill University. Dr. Hsu has been published in Digestive Disease Week, Surgical Endoscopy, and Mastery of Laparoscopic Surgery.

Dr. Philip Mitchell

Dr. Mitchell did his premedical and medical degrees at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, followed by a rotating internship in Ottawa, and general surgical training at the University of Calgary. After obtaining his Fellowship in 1991 he went on to Adelaide, Australia to complete 2 years of advanced upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgical training with Professor Glyn Jamieson (a world expert in the field). Establishing his practice in Calgary he has continued to push the laparoscopic envelope, introducing many of the advanced laparoscopic procedures to the Calgary area including laparoscopic banding in 2005.

Dr. Mitchell is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of Calgary and is helping to teach and train physicians and surgeons of the future. He has also been on the faculty of CMAS (Center of Minimal Access Surgery) in Hamilton, Ontario training surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques.

Working with 2 other UGI surgeons, and recently recruiting a 4th and possibly a 5th UGI surgeon, Dr. Mitchell has developed an Upper Gastrointestinal Center of Excellence (UGICE) in Calgary that manages many of Western Canada’s complex gastric and esophageal cancers and benign conditions such as reflux disease and large hiatus hernias. Dr. Mitchell maintains privileges at all hospitals throughout the Calgary Health Region.

Dr. Mitchell began Laparoscopic Banding in Calgary in 2006 with three other like-minded and skilled UGI surgeons and partnered with the Surgical Weight Loss Centre in 2008. Surgical Weight Loss Centre was purchased by Centric Health and rebranded to Smartshape™ Weight Loss Centre in 2012.

Dr. Neil Orzech

Dr. Neil Orzech is a Royal College Board-certified surgeon, specializing in Minimally Invasive, Bariatric, and General Surgery at our Centric Health Surgical Toronto.

Dr. Orzech graduated with his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of Ottawa Medical School. He also holds a Master’s in Education from the University of Toronto. He was a Research Fellow within the division of Toronto General Hospital’s Wilson Centre for Research in Medical Education and was a Resident Researcher for the University of Toronto’s Surgeon Scientist and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Clinical Investigator Program.

He completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Toronto followed by a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Orzech has co-authored 10 peer-reviewed publications and holds numerous awards including: The Harrison Award for Excellence in Teaching, Division of General Surgery Teaching Award for Surgical Excellence and the University Health Network “Sopman" Humanitarian Award
